The forgotten command

On my current assignment I’ve established a policy for VMWare images. We use VMWare for doing Proof of Concepts but also to deliver and maintain a “mirror” of our production middleware environment together with appropriate tooling to our development team.

Basically it’s about getting a VMWare image that adheres to corporate guidelines in terms of security and so forth and starting making linked clones out of that one. I use VMWare Workstation in the image creation process but need to distribute the linked clones to a lot of collegues using VMWare player.

It’s hard to standardize on paths on the developers boxes, so I decided to go for the good old subst command. Using the subst command we’ve made it possible for all our users of the images to use any path on their boxes as far as they have all images in a folder that is substituted to V:
